's affair was discovered and who in washington was told about it. then there's the fbi investigation that inadvertently exposed the whole thing. a probe into some harassing e-mails allegedly sent by petraeus's biography, paula broadwell. tonight nbc has learned who the fbi believes was on the receiving end of those e-mails. nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker has been working the story. she joins us now with the latest developments. kristen? >> reporter: lester, good evening. according to multiple government officials, the woman who made the initial complaint to the fbi is a close family friend of general petraeus, and there is no indication of anything more. now, the details are still murky, and lawmakers are demanding more answers. ♪ >> reporter: according to a senior federal official and close friend of david petraeus, 37-year-old jill kelly complained to fbi agents about being harassed by paula broadwell, david petraeus's biography. a senior u.s. military official says jill kelly is involved in wounded warrior fund-raising in tampa, is married, she and her husband
that departure now from 11 news washington reporter brian moore. >> the sudden fall of the cia chief has washington asking how and why. and the woman suddenly in the spotlight, paula broadwell isn't saying. back in january she was promoting her book on the general. >> he absolutely loves the agency. >> broadwell arch west point graduate and army reserve officer had close access to the cia director. federal agents are investigating whether she had access to his e-mails or computer. >> my understanding is that the fbi's investigation into what took place on computers there did not necessarily -- was not focused on him. that came by information by accident. >> law enforcement and multiple u.s. sources tell nbc news that e-mails between the general and paula broadwell were indicative of an extra marital affair. nbc news tried but was unable to reach paula broadwell for comment. in his resignation letter, the general revealed he had showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extra marital affair. law enforcement sources tell nbc news that the general is not under investigation and that
that lead to his depar ture. we begin tonight with bob orr in washington. >> good luck, sir. >> reporter: sources say the down fall of cia director david petraeus was rooted in jealousy. the f business, uncovered evidence of an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell after she sent harassing messages to another woman who broadwell thought was too close to petraeus. source have identified the second woman as 37-year-old jill kelley of the tampa area. cbs news has been told kelley is a civilian without does work for the u.s. central command. petraeus headed the central command from late 2008 to mid 2010. and during that time presented kelley and her husband an award for raising money to pay for junior enlisted men and women to attend military balls. petraeus has told friends that he had no romantic involvement with kelley. and only saw her when she was with her husband. law enforcement officials say they found no evidence to refute that. and described kelley as a victim who received and messages.threatening some close to petraeus say he's told them the affair with broadw
